One of the first types of fixed boom was the French wire boom. These are designed to be fitted to the line without knots. A loop of line is pushed through the triangle at the end of the stainless steel french wire boom several times and when pulled tight it stays in place. The idea is that you can adjust the depth of the boom easily.
